KYC and AML

Comply with KYC and AML regulations by:

  • Gathering and analyzing identity documents and proof-of-address documents
  • Comparing against government sanctions, PEP lists, and proprietary compiled PEP lists
  • Reviewing results
  • Maintaining an audit trail and compliance records

The KYC and AML products may be used together or separately.

KYC

Gather KYC documents

If a customer has emailed you documents, you may upload them to Rebilly. It is more secure and faster to have your customer upload documents directly to the system.

To enable your customer to upload documents directly, generate a special link. The customer can browse to that link and complete the document submission process.

We named the app the "KYC document gatherer" (see a preview of the end-customer experience).

This app is localized and translated into 14 languages. The customer will receive further instructions if they attempt to upload an invalid image (such as a selfie or blurry ID).

Alternatively, you may wish to skin this app yourself, or build your own app because everything is powered by our APIs.

Analyze KYC documents

Rebilly automatically analyzes identity-proof documents, and generates a score based on:

  1. It looks like an ID.
  2. It has a pictured face.
  3. It is not in an online search database (which means it was grabbed from a search engine).
  4. Contains the customer's first and last name.
  5. Contains the customer's date of birth.
  6. Contains an expiration date, which is in the future.
  7. Contains an issue date.
  8. Is of a minimum age (eg 18 years old).

This is the online equivalent to showing your ID when you purchase alcohol or pass through airport security. The analysis works across many languages and countries. Rebilly is regularly expanding the algorithm as government issued IDs continue to evolve.

Countries supported

All countries not sanctioned by the US, UN, UK or EU are supported.

Types of documents

There are two main document types supported:

  • proof of identity
  • proof of address

The automated analysis currently works with proof of identity only and works with government issued IDs which could include any documents with photos:

  • passport
  • driver license
  • national identity card
  • regional identity card (such as a state or province)
  • social insurance card with photo

This process happens automatically and requires no interaction from you or your customer.

Review KYC documents

Rebilly publishes a "KYC Workbench" which is a purpose-built tool to enable compliance officers (or MLRO) to efficiently review submitted documents. The user can mark an identity as reviewed, or change the status from accepted to rejected or vice-versa (which also marks it as reviewed). A complete audit trail is kept of activity and visible in the customer's timeline.

Technical integration

See our KYC integration guide for technical integration information.

AML sanctions, PEP, and adverse media lists

AML, sanctions and PEP lists are used to check customer-provided information against lists published by governments and proprietary lists compiled by Rebilly.

Lists checked

  • US OFAC (sanctions)
  • UN sanctions
  • EU sanctions
  • US CIA (PEP)
  • Wikidata (PEP)
  • Proprietary (PEP)

Lists are updated daily.

Fuzzy matching

We use fuzzy matching algorithms including: partial match, sounds-like (Soundex algorithm), and typos (Levenshtein algorithm) to identify possible matches.

Review

Review possible matches and determine, based on all the information you may have, if this customer is a match or a false positive. A known false positive will be suppressed from future alerts for a 1 year period.
